When Childbirth Feels Complicated: Discussion of Birth Trauma and Suggestions for Clinical Practice


Overview:

This talk will provide an overview of birth trauma and associated psychological sequalae for gestational parents, families and partners, along with medical providers and staff who care for them. Shiloh Eastin, Psy.D. will provide information on prevalence, risk factors for experiencing a birth trauma, guidance on recognizing psychological distress following birth trauma, and recommendations for clinical practice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to describe the risk factors for birth trauma. 
  2. Participants will be able to assess for history of birth trauma in clinical interactions. 
  3. Participants will be able to apply therapeutic techniques when providing clinical care for patients who have a history of or are at risk for birth trauma.

Presenter:

Shiloh "Lola" Eastin, PsyD, PMH-C, is a licensed clinical perinatal psychologist and a Clinical Instructor in Medical Psychology (in Psychiatry) within the Department of Psychiatry. She holds a hospital appointment at NYPH/CUIMC where she provides clinical care within the hospital’s Obstetric units and the Department of Psychiatry’s Women’s Program. Her clinical interests include Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs), in particular anxiety disorders and postpartum OCD, along with associated stressors that can arise during the perinatal period including infertility, perinatal loss, traumatic birth, and coping with maternal-fetal medical complications. Her therapeutic style is warm, collaborative, and compassionate. She primarily utilizes Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and will also integrate aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, mindfulness, and dyadic techniques to help patients meet their goals. She is passionate about integrating mental health care into medical settings and increasing access to care for traditionally under-resourced and marginalized communities.
