We have identified a subpopulation of slowly cycling ‘mesenchymal’ glioma cells,  which we hypothesize give rise to post-treatment recurrent glioma. We have chosen ferroptosis as a therapeutic strategy to target these cells for the following reasons: sensitivity to ferroptosis does not require that the cell be rapidly proliferating, recent studies have found that drug-resistant tumor cells from a variety of cancers have a mesenchymal phenotype that depends on the lipid peroxidase pathway and that these drug-resistant tumor cells are sensitive to ferroptosis-inducing drugs.
