Refugee Rehabilitation and the Remaking of Landscapes

October 8, 2026
12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
America/New_York
Fayerweather Hall, 1180 Amsterdam Ave., New York, NY 10027 413

Join us as historian Kalyani Ramnath, Assistant Professor of History, explores refugee resettlement in South Asia.

The presentation focuses on refugee rehabilitation and resettlement schemes in South Asia in the 1970s and their impact on discourses around democracy and development. It studies one site - the Andamans and Nicobar archipelagos in the Indian Ocean - closely, where resettled peoples make claims for land ownership while maintaining a contested relationship with the island's indigenous communities. The presentation will explore the twentieth century history of these islands and the relationship with the mainland, the fractures of race, caste, and indigeneity that these settlements continue to expose.
