Election week is rapidly approaching, and we are setting up new Listening Tables! Join us next week if you want to find a place to have a dialogue.
Walk-ins are welcome. Food will be provided.
The main idea of Listening Tables is to provide a space where difficult and sometimes deeply polarizing issues can be addressed through dialogue rather than debate and hostile confrontation. Our initiative seeks to model a new way of working through conflicts in our community based on mutual respect, and we want to ensure that students joining these sessions can be confident that they will be listened to without judgment. Our sense is that the conflicts that consumed our campus last spring, and are still smoldering, were made more intractable by the lack of a space for such civil dialogue—the tables are meant to create such a space. In the past six weeks, we have organized 30 table sessions with many members of our community, such as President Armstrong, Provost Olinto, and various deans, administrators, and faculty who facilitated conversations with hundreds of students on topics ranging from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to campus protests.
Hosts & Sessions:
Maria Martinez, Jaxon Williams-Bellamy, Bruce Goumain, University Senators
Ian Rottenberg, Dean of Religious Life, Director of the Earl Hall and Associate Chaplain, Religious Life
Roger Lehecka, Professor Emeritus
Walk-ins are welcome. Food will be provided.
