An expert panel will seek to reassess the enduring impact of the Iraq war.
Twenty years on since the US invasion of Iraq and the country is facing unprecedented political and governance challenges that they are struggling to address. With differing perspectives among Iraq's political powerbrokers on government formation, the situation is exacerbated by armed non-state actors, sectarian divisions, corruption, a fragile economy, and public dissatisfaction.
This panel aims to reassess the enduring impact of the Iraq war on the MENA region. It convenes experts who will examine post-conflict challenges, identify potential risks, and propose strategies to prevent the fragmentation of the Iraqi state. The discussion will provide historical and geopolitical context to understand the emergence of a new regional order, highlighting significant post-war events and the subsequent processes of change. Panelists will also delve into the impact of evolving strategic alignments in the MENA region on Iraq's internal politics and analyze the necessary reforms to prevent deeper divisions and improve state-society relations.
