How do we reckon with the imbalances in the archive?

The Diversity in Librarianship panel series seeks to expand our understanding of challenges faced by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Peoples of Color) librarians, educators, and patrons. We invite panelists from various organizations to present on their projects that stand at the crossroads of research institutions and community engagement.

For the second annual panel, Drs. Tiffany Momon and Torren Gatson will join us from Sewanee University and University of North Carolina Greensboro to discuss their work as the founders of the Black Craftspeople Digital Archive (BDCA). The BDCA began as a project founded by Dr. Momon, inspired by her research into John “Quash” Williams, an enslaved and later free(d) Black carpenter. By Fall 2019, the project expanded to include more Black craftspeople in Charleston, South Carolina involved in a variety of trades. Dr. Torren Gatson, as a historic preservationist, has contributed his own research on the impact of African American material culture on the physical and cultural landscape of America.

There will be a Q&A session following the presentations.
