Speaker: Dr. Alex Townsend, Cornell University
Title: "An Applied Mathematician with AI"
Abstract: With a chatbot, an applied mathematician can delegate mundane tasks. With an AI agent, one can compute, discover, and verify. With a swarm of AI agents, the whole research landscape changes. Through a series of mathematical results, I will describe how AI has increased the pace of my research, accelerated my understanding, and led a neuroscientist to scoop me. Despite all the uncertainty, my ambitions for applied mathematics are now bigger than ever.
Bio: Alex Townsend is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Cornell University. His research is in numerical analysis and scientific computing, with interests including numerical linear algebra, approximation theory, dynamical systems, operator learning, and scientific machine learning. He is also the coauthor, with Steven Strogatz, of the popular science book Big Math.
