Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy For Faculty

To ensure a responsible use of AI tools for teaching and learning, faculty are expected to comply with the Columbia University Generative AI Policy, which serves as the institutional governing framework on the use of Generative AI for staff, faculty, students, and researchers (the “Columbia community”) in the performance of their functions for or on behalf of Columbia.

This supplemental policy extends the University’s principles to the SPS context by emphasizing applied learning, industry alignment, and the responsible integration of AI across teaching, professional practice, and other activities conducted on behalf of SPS.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy For Faculty - FAQs

 In 2024, SPS created the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Guidance as emerging AI technology began to be utilized widely. In 2026, the AI Policy for Faculty was created by the newly formed AI in Teaching and Learning Committee (AITL) and approved by the Office of the Dean to replace the 2024 Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Guidance.

The AI Policy for Faculty is meant to outline faculty responsibilities across all faculty activities and form the foundation for appropriate AI use within SPS. The resources below are helpful in clarifying University and SPS best practices, CUIT AI policies, and University policies when it comes to AI.

There is no directive at the SPS school level, but it may be required at the Program level. You can connect with your Program Director for further clarification.

For research-related activities, faculty should consult the Columbia University Generative AI Policy.
